BIOGRAPHICAL BRIEF
Dave Gatley is currently an Independent Editorial Illustration Photographer covering assignments West of the Rockies and along the Southwestern Border states. Formerly the Chief Photographer with the San Diego Bureau of the Los Angeles Times, Dave has been a professional photographer for over 33 years. He had been with the Los Angeles Times for 18 years. Prior to that he was a freelance commercial / editorial photographer the previous 10 years. Dave currently covers the Southwest region for numerous editorial publications and commercial corporations like: Barron’s, Forbes, George, Insight, Newsweek, People, Reader’s Digest, Time, Dallas Morning News, Newsday, Pittsburgh Post, LA Times, NY Daily News, NY Times, SJ Mercury News, Wash. Post, Wash. Times, USA Today, CBS News and "60 Minutes", California State University San Marcos, General Dynamics, ITT-Night Vision, Legoland - CA, Lockheed, Motorola, NBC "Dateline", National Education Association (NEA), Pacific Bell, Public Broadcast System (PBS), Peregrine, Zoological Society of San Diego, United Service Organization (USO) and many more. Dave was nominated three times for a Pulitzer Prize, and was once a finalist. A sampling of his news work includes, the San Ysidro Massacre (aka: the McDonald's Massacre), the Mexico City Earthquake, the Olympics, hundreds of fires, floods, hurricanes, school shootings in Springville, OR, Columbine HS, Denver, CO, to unusual incidents like the Heaven's Gate cult. Although his assignments have taken Dave all over the world, he is best known for his coverage of the Southwest Border, its immigration issues, drug smuggling and corruption related stories. Countless news, business, events, feature, photo essays and profile stories are now the regular assignment shoots. Additionally, Dave has been a Lead Photographer for FEMA, Federal Emergency Management Agency - part of the Emergency Response Team (ERT-N) that is called in to respond to major national emergencies anywhere in the U.S. or its US protectorates. Nationally and locally recognized as an award winning photojournalist, he has been published in most U.S. and foreign publications, newspapers and magazines. His work appears in over two-dozen books, most currently in: *Our American Century / Immigrants • The New Americans / Time-Life Books - 1999; *LIFE: Century of Change / Bulfinch - 2000; *The NAVY / Naval Historical Foundation - 2000; *Wall Of Fame / Freedman - 2000; *The San Diego Wild Animal Park / ZSSD - 2000; *The World-Famous San Diego Zoo / ZSSD - 2000; *Little Panda / Schuster - 2001; *Cat Attacks / Miller - 2001. Digital Imaging Solutions consultation is a current endeavor, the most dynamic example of which has been the design, direction and implementation of the Digital Archiving Project with the Zoological Society of San Diego, creating a digital database from nearly 1/2 million images. The very successful FEMA News Photo Desk, operating from FEMA Headquarters in Washington D.C. and their “Digital Photo Go Kits” are other products of his work. Dave has been a board member and vice president of the LA Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers and currently on the San Diego Chapter board.
